If you're a night owl and you keep trying to force yourself into a 5:00 AM routine because some successful entrepreneur on the internet said you have to, this is your permission slip to stop. I'm a business and leadership coach, and I help service-based business owners and leaders become high-performing CEOs and scale their businesses without burning out. And a big part of that is building high-performance habits that actually raise your effectiveness. I was coaching a client recently, and they said, "I keep trying to go to bed earlier and wake up earlier, but life happens, and then I feel like I'm failing." And here's what I told them: Your business doesn't need you to become a different human. It needs you to protect your energy. And here is the slightly controversial truth that I believe. When you borrow someone else's framework, morning routine, planning system, productivity method, or whatever that is, if you can implement it exactly as taught, amazing. It's probably been tested, and it might be optimal, but it's not always optimal for you. Most entrepreneurs don't struggle because they don't have a routine. They struggle because they're trying to shove their life into a routine that doesn't fit. It's like a Cinderella shoe syndrome. Trying to force your foot into a shoe that's not yours and then blaming yourself when it hurts. So instead of throwing the whole routine out, do this. Protect your sleep first. Stop forcing 5:00 AM if you're a night owl. Choose a bedtime and wake-up time that you can sustain most days and that allows you to recover properly and have energy the next day. Fit the routine into your life, not your life into the routine. Pick one or two non-negotiable things that you want to do during that routine. So for example, in the evening, maybe you take 10 minutes to look at your next day and make sure that you have a plan and a simple wind down, maybe it's 10 minutes reading. And then adjust this as your life changes. Your routine should evolve with seasons, whether it's kids, travel, launches, your cycle, all of it. I do it myself in my own life. The moment my life circumstances change, I adjust my routines to flow with it and not create more obstacles or make my life harder than it needs to be.
